Saigon lacquer - harmony of tradition and contemporaneity
A lacquer painting exhibition called Saigon Lacquer opened at the Applied Arts
Gallery, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District on January 26 to
mark the Year of the Tiger and the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
The exhibition features nearly 50 works of 46 artists from famous seasoned
brushes such as Hoang Tram, Nguyen Van Kinh, Nguyen Thanh Quoc Thanh, Tran Van
Loc, Vo Nam and Hoang Lan Anh to young artists such as Ho Huu Thu and Le Kinh
Tai.
“People often think lacquer painting is out of fashion and lacks creativeness,
but lacquer can do all the things of contemporary paintings with creativeness,
diverse ideas and meticulousness.
Lacquered works bring viewers a sense of profoundness, thoughtfulness,
fancifulness and nostalgia,” said Vo Nam, seasoned artist and director of the
gallery.
Visiting the exhibition, viewers will have a chance to recall traditional
culture and customs, such as an animated atmosphere of a traditional festival
with people in traditional costumes and views of an old wharf, a gas station and
ancient houses. “I really like Vietnamese paintings, especially works on display
today as I can see Vietnam a dozens years ago. I think in the memory of
Vietnamese people, tradition is something nice, sacred and peaceful. I
especially like portraits of Vietnamese women, they look charming, gentle and
beautiful,” said Andy, a viewer from England.
Also on display are contemporary works including nudes and abstracts. The
exhibition runs until February 22.
