UNESCO helps preserve vocal arts
A project to preserve and develop quan ho (love duet singing) and
ca tru (ceremonial singing) has been approved by authorities in Bac Ninh
province in the North.
The project, backed by UNESCO as intangible heritage, will receive VND65 billion
(US$3.2 million) from the provincial budget over the next seven years.
The main aim of the project will be to teach quan ho and ca tru and popularising
them in the community – and restoring pagodas and temples, where the arts were
performed in the past.
First up, the province will focus on quan ho performance space and develop
original quan ho villages.
Already, apart from 45 original quan ho villages, the vocal art has been
practised in 329 other villages.
Under the project, ca tru artisans will be honoured and ca tru clubs will be
developed.
There are now four ca tru clubs in the province.
