Bai Choi folksongs proposed for UNESCO recognition
The Viet Nam Institute of Culture and Arts is preparing to submit
the bai choi folksongs to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), for recognition as an intangible cultural
heritage in the world in need of urgent protection.
The news was made public on February 6 at a meeting with Danang authorities to
collect researches and analysis data and seek ways to preserve and restore all
existing documents on bai choi folksongs.
Danang one of eight South Central Costal provinces are responsible for
collecting data for the Institute to compose dossier for submission to the
UNESCO.
Bai choi singing is a traditional art form that originated in the South-central
region of Việt Nam and is often practiced by the people of this area during
Lunar New Year Festival.
Although most of the singers were amateurs, the lyrics of the songs were
self-motivating. All the bai choi folksongs have been preserved until today.
